Swimming Pool Accidents
Many of these drownings and near drownings occur in backyard swimming pools. According to one study, a swimming pool is 14 times more likely than an automobile to be involved in the death of a child under the age of five. Of those children who drown, 70 percent are in the care of one or both parents at the time of the accident, and 75 percent are missing for five minutes or less. In order to prevent swimming pool accidents, pool owners should take a number of steps to secure the pool. Pool owners should keep the pool area safe and secure by installing a fence around the pool which separates the pool from the yard and the entrances to the home. The fence should be at least four feet in height, with self-closing and self-latching gates. Owners should inspect and replace dangerous or recalled pool drains. Owners should also remove all steps and ladders to an above ground pool or spa if it’s not being used. The most important step to preventing pool accidents is to properly supervise the pool when it’s in use, especially when children are using the pool. For older children or teenagers who know how to swim, insist that they always swim with a buddy. Do not allow floatation devices to take the place of an adult or a swim buddy. If you or a loved one has been a swimming pool accident victim, you may have a legal right to compensation. You could have a case against a negligent adult who failed to properly supervise his or her pool, a property owner who failed to secure the pool, or a swimming pool manufacturer who made a defective pool part. Damages could include compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more.
