Want to Reduce the Odds of a Motorcycle Crash? Take a Safety Course!

Motorcycle Safety Courses offered in over 120 locations in California
As an avid motorcyclist, as well as a personal injury attorney, I understand the importance of preventative planning in avoiding accidents of all types, including motorcycle accidents. I have learned over the years that one of the most important things a motorcyclist can do is to learn and practice basic riding skills. That’s why I highly recommend that motorcyclists take a safety course offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
In California, those classes are offered by the California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP). CMSP trains about 65,000 motorcyclists every year and has classes at over 120 sites in California. If you finish a Basic RiderCourse, you will receive a certificate for the DMV that could waive the riding test requirement.
The Basic RiderCourse is for beginning riders of all ages. The Course includes five hours of classroom instruction and ten hours of riding exercises, usually in a paved parking lot. The motorcycles and helmets are included free of charge.
In the classroom portion of the program, riders learn about the types of motorcycles, layout and operation of controls, safety gear, and general safety tips. In the driving portion, an assigned coach will teach you about riding in a straight line, stopping, shifting and turning, before learning more advanced maneuvers.
